it's so we can go ahead and get this going I thought about 6:03 or so so we've given everyone a chance to kind of get on I'm Tim Strickland call about car Virtual Academy just want to welcome everyone here tonight I appreciate anyone that does Tunes in appreciate your time we're going to try to do here is give me a just a little bit inside about carpal Virtual Academy at Santikos theater at Miss Johnson is well here she's our show Johnson is our vice principal wanted to give you a chance if you had any questions to be able to ask them but you see a little bit of what cardboard Virtual Academy has to offer Dennis Lowe and Miss Gunther and miss love I'm going to share my screen and get those presentations started and then I'll talk about all right if somebody could just give me a quick thumbs-up let me know you guys can see my screen thank you so much okay so evening yes thank you guys for coming tuning in allowing us the chance to just share some of the wonderful things that we do at Collierville Virtual Academy my name is Elizabeth Lowe I teach English language arts and social studies at the elementary level Miss Mary Beth Gunter teaches English language arts and science at the middle school level and she and I will just kind of go over some things this evening if we just met mr. Strickland send a message to Cheryl Johnson our assistant principal I'm going to start just with a video overview that just kind of gives you a glimpse into what we do here at CBA established in 2020 Carnival virtual Academy's mission is to provide students with high-quality instruction in a flexible learning environment while creating a positive learning experience for students succeed and feel a sense of community and asynchronous learning opportunities are designed to deliver instruction that is focused meaningful and impactful for all CBS the children have become more self-motivated they take ownership of their learning I'm able to learn at my own pace and all of the teachers are available to help us any time that we need help I think I'll see what's the best got it is that you can go at your own pace so he really learned how to manage his time which I think is more like for him to college experience will be how do you budget all these different things that you need to do yet the staff was extremely approachable and extremely responsive these students are engaged they are listening and hanging on every word that we say our classes are still challenging and interactive we are actually in class we have lots of application sometimes we could stay we have like conversations taking time to slow down and then talk about I didn't really learn it deeper I felt like they were more and not that they weren't just learning the basics be kind of dig a little bit deeper and teachers they talked to them it's not like it's just that you watch and then bam here's your homework there's communication and they know your students and talk to your child I really like my teachers for like nice and like fast for some help help me with the help you out a lot pictures and we could've asked the staff to be more responsive than they were so selling point for ceva that students know each other and whenever we do get to come in person you get to see I feel like I know my students even more because of the small any classes that we have you really quickly develop relationships with them and get to know them we laugh together we cry together we we do all the things just like you would expect to see in a normal classroom those are happening right they're virtually I like the community I like how I'm able to talk to everyone how supportive everyone is of one another I truly like enjoy it going to school and learning because it is a great environment so what can CBA offer to your child lots of things we follow the very same curriculum that all Collierville schools do we use the same books the same materials the same assessments the same things that they're getting in all of our Collierville in-person school we use those same thing virtually we offer special services english-as-a-second-language gifted Services sped Services IEPs those are individualized education plans everything that we can do to meet the needs of our various learners we do that just like they do in the in-person schools teachers meet with the students live every single day so I think it's important to know that these students will receive live instruction from daily we go over all of their assignments everything they need to know how to do how to complete each task for that day we go over that with them and ensure that they understand and know what to do before they're just ask to turn something in we record all of our lessons so parents can go back and View and re-watch those recorded lessons students can go back and re-watch those lessons if they need to all the lessons recorded and available at all times I feel like I don't interject right there so I feel like one of the misconceptions that people may have about the Virtual Academy is this daily synchronous instruction that they have this mindset that hey we're just pushing out things and there's no interaction between us and I think that's what makes us special and stand apart from the other options that are like this in our community that this is something that we are able to provide I feel like it's specially with our small classes that we've been able to have we been able to even go deeper with our curriculum we've covered more ground when we compared to what is happening in in person it's just synchronous instruction is unlike what you could get in some cases and in person and environment it does and I think a lot don't realize that the students it's like they are attending school every day with a teacher they're just doing so from home running a regular schedule just like you're the third thing on the slide organization and time management and I think one of the parents in the video mention that these kids are required to meet with these teachers online every day so they have to learn to follow a schedule so right this year my students know at 8:30 a.m. they have to meet with me in class they know on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:30 they're meeting with some sort of specialist teacher they know it 12 every single day they're received Math and Science from my partner teacher they know their afternoon schedule at 2 every day we have a built-in intervention block where teachers can really hone in and meet the specific individual needs different Learners so that intervention block might look like in Richmond work and trying to meet the needs of those higher-level Learners some days it is taking the students that are struggling with kind of grasping a certain Concepts and reteaching or reviewing when necessary but that daily intervention our is built-in for us every day to ensure that we can meet the needs of all of our Learners we also have office hours built into our schedule every day so that we can open our doors open our phone lines to parents or students if they request a meeting with us to go over anything or ask any questions so time management there learn follow a schedule what else can we offer your child I had to throw this in here Advanced online communication skills the world we live in has changed so many business as companies have moved to this video conferencing and they speak to each other and have meetings all around the world virtually our students we're having them do that every single day hey and they're learning this kind of etiquette of communicating online knowing when to speak when to listen how to be involved how to pay attention they're getting all of those skills at this young age what else social interaction I think this is possibly a concern for some worried that their children won't get the social interaction and in the development of those very important social skills please hear us say they do socially interact everyday early every day in class I put my students into small groups so they're in a small private chat room with two or three of their peers they work on assignments together they do projects together I'm sometimes have them quiz each other on a certain skills that were covering for that week or whatever but they interact with each other and they loved it they all feel like we're all friends we we know each other for the year we also have scheduled in-person activities so we try to meet at least once a month we've gone bowling we've had picnics in the park we've got on field trip we had them come in for play parties in Winter holidays and Valentines Day and then they do come in periodically to take some in-person assessments not every assessment that we give is in person but the big ones the bench Mark assessments that are district-wide we have them come in person to take I want to piggyback on that and say all of this sounds like things to do in an elementary student when I do but I assure you this is Middle School like the picnics in the park that was how was my idea that like I I'm a social person and I want to make sure that the kids still have this and these are like is that I'm like hey let's make this happen for our kids my team is amazing and we're always thinking of the next thing so the next time we see the kids what are we going to do with them so that they have a little something extra in special because we want to make the most of this time together and we don't want them to feel like they are having less of of that social part and we all know kids kids want to talk they want to play they want to be with other kids their age and we want to try to do best that we can to make sure that they still have those experiences even even in this little virtual world absolutely all right what can see VA offer to you as a parent probably one of my favorite things about virtual learning is the complete transparency of it all parents are able to see exactly how content is delivered exactly how their children are being taught it's not just that they drop their kids off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon and they say hey what you do at school today no longer they can watch the recorded lessons they can listen in on lessons as your students are are hearing them I'm so at all times they see everything that goes on in our classroom we post some kind of agenda every single day and we post this for parents to see so that they can help encourage and help manage their child at but we post it for the students and I teach the students how to view the gender like a checklist this is do you have to do today this is what needs to be turned in and of course in class I go over everything that they need to know but it all starts built around what do you have to submit today parents can always see all assignments all projects quizzes tests we primarily used to platforms maybe a couple of other ones but mainly schoology and classkick are how we deliver and receive the students assignments parents had access to all of that parents can connect to their child's account and see exactly what their student their child is turning in for work each day and parents can always ski report card grades and the PowerSchool Parent Portal taking that up to that next level for Middle School some platforms that we use our textbooks are a little different so for the ELA World We have set I think service for math but no different those things are where you can the instruction can be delivered there and it can be turned back into the teacher but parents always you do is ask for that iPad and say let me see what you got let me see the things are turned in just its the new checking the backpack in the afternoon like let me see what there is that needs to be done and that's even true for our middle schoolers we would send them home what their agenda in the middle school is the same thing what did you do in class today is that easy conversation that opens up in ours is so transparent it's much better than that normal conversation that you get from a typical middle schooler would you do at school today nothing you're right there you know that it was a full day so I love it to you as well I think it's something that it was an adjustment for us as teachers but me and it's great to know that our parents are fully engaged in what we're doing as well and I love that makes it so much easier yes I agree so we do expect our it's to be online daily have their cameras turned on listening following along paying attention this is me sharing my screen just going over the content going over exactly how they need to complete this assignment we expect them to be engaged we asked them to listen to raise their hand pay attention to follow along questions and they do and they tune in every day they they seem to look forward to it to be excited about it and it excites me to work with them so daily instructions very important again also Every Day's lesson is recorded So if there's an absence for whatever reason or if your you feel like your child maybe just wasn't listening as well that day you can always re-watch the text be delivered please visit our website so there is a place to apply to attend Collierville Virtual Academy but there's also several other things on our website information why's there's examples of student work across grade levels so you can kind of see what the project students have done and turned in so there is a link to apply on the website okay so questions what questions do you have and you can either raise your hand or you're welcome to post them in the chat I know several of us are kind of watching that how to see if there's any question which I don't see alright okay well I'm going to stop sharing that anyone have any questions for the teachers or for us administrator is just kind of get an idea of something that you may have had a question about just didn't didn't get answered we will use our wait time if we wait in the classroom good night if you have any questions either Miss low or Miss Gunther on myself Miss Johnson any one of us can answer these questions tonight or I just need to shoot us an email and we will be happy to answer any questions that you may have do you want to have anything before we hate to call it quits if you have a question but okay does not like we're going to have any questions tonight I appreciate time and people coming out and if you have any questions just give us a call or you can call us at 472-8669 or you can email either like I said myself Miss Johnson any of the teachers to try to find out any information I will we thank
